Creag Dhubh Hill Race
The Creag Dhubh Hill Race takes place on 1 August 2026 as part of the Newtonmore Highland Games at The Eilan, Newtonmore. The course covers varied terrain and finishes with a lap of the games field.
The route begins with a full lap of the games field before moving through an obstacle area that includes two barriers, a lumpy field with thistles, two more fences, a river, rounded boulders, a very steep bank and a fence next to a crash barrier, then crosses a road into the main climb.
The race proper follows a wide gravel track toward the birch woods of Coille na Creige Duibhe. A narrow grassy path leads upward to a rockier trail through heather and on to the perched summit of An Torr. The descent initially runs through heather onto the narrow trail with limited opportunity for overtaking until lower sections.
After the road crossing the return includes multiple fences and a river crossing before a final lap of the games field to the finish. Distance is 5.6 km with a climb of 370 m. Entries are open from 28 February 2026 until 30 July 2026 at 20:00, minimum age is 16 or older and the entry fee is £10. Entries listed so far total 8 participants. Course record times are 26:49 (men, 2019) and 32:21 (women, 2006). Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
