Creag Dhubh Hill Race

The Creag Dhubh Hill Race is a traditional mountain running event held as part of the Newtonmore Highland Games. Located at The Eilan in Newtonmore, the course covers a distance of 5.6 km (approximately 3.5 miles) with a total ascent of 370m. The race is open to individuals aged 16 or older.

The route begins with a full lap of the games field before athletes navigate a series of varied terrain and obstacles. This initial section includes crossing five fences or barriers, a river, a field of thistles, rounded boulders, and a steep bank. Participants must also cross a road before transitioning into the climbing phase of the race.

Once clear of the initial obstacles, the course follows a wide gravel track toward the birch woods of Coille na Creige Duibhe. From there, a narrow path leads through grass and eventually turns into a rocky trail through heather. The ascent culminates at the summit of An Torr.

The return journey involves a descent through heather and back down the narrow trail. After crossing the road again, runners must navigate the same set of obstacles, including the fences and river crossing, in reverse. The race concludes with a final lap of the games field.
