Cow Chip Classic Run/Walk
The Cow Chip Classic is an annual event held in Prairie du Sac during Labor Day weekend. Organized by the Sauk Prairie Community Club, the competition coincides with the Wisconsin State Cow Chip Throw and enters its 46th year. Participants can choose between two primary distances:
- 10 km run
- 5 km run or walk
The course begins in Prairie du Sac near Marion Park, located at the corner of Grand Avenue and Fourth Street. Both routes lead participants across the Wisconsin River. The 10 km course includes a section known as "Heartbreak Hill" and passes the Lake Wisconsin Golf course before returning to the town. The 5 km route follows Golf Road for a portion of the distance before turning back toward the finish area.
Timing for both events is recorded using transponder chips attached to the race bibs. Participants are grouped into age divisions starting from 14 and under, moving in five-year increments up to a 70 and over category for both male and female runners. Awards include plaques for winners and medals for second and third-place finishers in each division.
On-site facilities at Marion Park include restrooms and showers. After completing the course, participants have access to refreshments and snacks. Proceeds from the registration fees are distributed back into the local community through the Sauk Prairie Community Club. Guidelines for the event state that animals are not permitted on the course or within the park grounds. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
