The runs are part of the three day Clewiston Sugar Festival. The festival traces its roots to an end of harvest celebration held by the United States Sugar Corporation from the 1930s. Historically the mill would be cleaned after the last carload of cane was processed, a barbecue was held for workers and families, and a dance with a King and Queen of Sugar followed. The original Sugarland Auditorium is now known as the John B. Boy Auditorium.
In 1986 the Clewiston Merchant Association expanded the idea into a city wide festival to showcase the community and recognize the local sugar industry. Over time the Sugar Festival developed multiple attractions including live entertainment, cane grinding demonstrations, a car show, a kids park, and food booths run by local civic, school and church organizations.
