Cottonmouth 8 Mile & Beerlay
The Cottonmouth 8 Mile & Beerlay takes place on June 6, 2026 at Lakewood Nature Preserve, 220 Lakewood Dr, Greenville, SC 29607. Donations and race proceeds support the Upstate Running Club Youth Team. The event is offered as an 8-mile solo run or an 8-mile relay for teams of 2 to 4.
Format, course and extras
The course is four laps of a 2-mile grassy trail loop through the preserve. The route includes rolling hills, wildlife sightings such as deer and foxes, and a rustic barn used as race headquarters and beer-staging area. Solo runners complete all four laps; relay teams have one runner per lap.
This event includes a BYOB element: each runner brings four beers (5%+ ABV) to a communal iced pool. Before each lap, participants receive a randomly selected, opened beer from the pool and must consume it prior to running the lap. The drinking portion is restricted to participants aged 21 and over; minors and sober participants may use carbonated non-alcoholic alternatives. No swapping of beers is allowed.
