Cottonmouth 8 Mile & Beerlay, Lakewood Nature Preserve, Greenville SC
The Cottonmouth event is an 8 mile trail race held at Lakewood Nature Preserve. The course is a 2 mile grassy loop run four times, with rolling hills and potential wildlife sightings. Race headquarters is near a rustic barn on site.
Participants may enter as a solo runner or as a relay team of 2 to 4 people. Solo runners complete all four laps. Relay teams tag a different runner for each lap. Chip timing and four-lap split tracking are provided for both solo and relay entries.
The event includes a BYOB drinking requirement for the alcoholic portion. Each runner brings four beers (5%+ ABV) to contribute to a shared iced pool. Before each lap a volunteer gives the runner a randomly selected, opened beer to consume prior to running. No swapping of beers is allowed. Alcohol consumption for the drinking portion is restricted to people aged 21 and older. Non-alcoholic carbonated alternatives are permitted for minors and sober participants.
Included with entry are park access, a custom race bib, a finisher medal, event giveaways, free race photos, music, a hot dog bar, and admission to post-race Beer Olympics games. Awards are given to the top three solo finishers and the top three teams in several divisions including men's, women's, mixed, masters, and youth. The event supports the local preserve.
