Conquer the Dam 5K
The Conquer the Dam 5K is an annual fundraising event held at Jennings Randolph Lake in Elk Garden, West Virginia. Now in its fourteenth year, the event is organized by Aging & Family Services of Mineral County. All proceeds from the run and walk support the local Meals on Wheels program, which provides nutrition and wellness checks for home-bound elderly residents in the community.
The course features a unique route that takes participants over the dam and spillway of Jennings Randolph Lake. This area is typically closed to the public, offering a rare opportunity to traverse the infrastructure of the 952-acre reservoir. The terrain consists of an asphalt road surface. The route is described as an out-and-back course that begins with a downhill section, continues with a flat stretch across the dam, and finishes with an uphill section.
Participants can choose from the following distances and categories:
- 5 km (Run or Walk)
- 3 km (Walk)
The event includes categories for both adults and youth. For those unable to attend the in-person event at the Howell Run Picnic Area, a virtual participation option is available. Virtual runners may complete their distance at a location of their choice and submit their times and photos via email. Pre-registered entrants who sign up by the designated deadline are guaranteed a commemorative t-shirt. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
