Coniston Fell Race
The Coniston Fell Race is held in the Lake District with the venue at Coniston Institute, LA21 8DU. The route is approximately 14 km with about 1,065 m of ascent and includes checkpoints on the summits of Wetherlam, Swirl How and the Old Man of Coniston. The course starts on the Copper Mines Road and finishes at Peasecroft; the final section is signposted from Miners' bridge.
Entries open on 5 January and close on 28 April; places are not available on the day. Minimum age is 18. Entry fees are listed for FRA members and non members. All proceeds from race entries are donated to Coniston Mountain Rescue Team; if the event is cancelled proceeds are shared with Coniston Primary School.
Navigation is by traditional map and compass only. All entrants must have fell running experience and the ability to use map and compass accurately. A mandatory kit check is carried out before numbers are issued; required items include a waterproof jacket with taped seams and hood, waterproof trousers, a traditional map and compass, whistle, hat covering the ears, insulating gloves and emergency food. GPS devices and running poles are not permitted for competition use.
Parking is provided at Coniston CE Primary for a cash charge; maps are sold at registration for cash or card. Teas, coffees and cakes are offered at the institute with proceeds to the school, and water is available at the finish. Results will be published on ukresults.net.
