Kathmandu Coast to Coast : event overview
The Kathmandu Coast to Coast is a multi-stage multisport race held each February across the South Island of New Zealand. The route runs from Kumara Beach on the West Coast to the Pier on New Brighton Beach in Christchurch on the East Coast. The event has run since 1983 and more than 20,000 people have completed it.
The course combines road cycling, wilderness trail running and river kayaking. The mountain run uses the Department of Conservation Mingha - Deception Route and crosses Goat Pass, with long sections over riverbeds, multiple river crossings and rough, rocky ground. Competitors are responsible for their own navigation on parts of the route and are advised to carry appropriate gear and maps or GPS. The kayak stage follows the Waimakariri River through braided sections and a gorge, with rapids up to Grade 2 and changing river lines. River safety personnel and jet boats assist at known trouble spots but much of the river is only reachable by boat.
Key stages and approximate distances:
- Run from Kumara Beach to bike transition, 2.2 km
- Cycle Kumara to Aickens transition, 55 km
- Mountain run over Goat Pass, about 30 km
- Cycle to Mt White plus short run to kayak put-in, 15 km cycle and 1.3 km run
- Kayak on the Waimakariri River, 70 km
- Final cycle to New Brighton Pier, 70 km
The route crosses alpine terrain and braided rivers; training on rough ground, awareness of river hazards and biosecurity practices are advised. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
