Kathmandu Coast to Coast
The Kathmandu Coast to Coast is an annual multisport race across New Zealand’s South Island, running from Kumara Beach on the West Coast to the New Brighton Pier in Christchurch on the East Coast. The event combines running, cycling and kayaking and crosses the Main Divide via the Mingha - Deception route (Goat Pass).
Distances and main stages:
- 2.2 km run from Kumara Beach.
- 55 km cycle along the Taramakau valley.
- 30 km mountain run over Goat Pass.
- 15 km cycle and 1.3 km run to the kayak put-in.
- 70 km kayak on the Waimakariri River.
- 70 km final cycle to New Brighton Pier.
The mountain run follows the DOC Mingha - Deception Route and includes rough riverbeds, multiple river crossings and about 800 m of ascent to Goat Pass (1070 m). The run is largely off trail and requires navigation skills, appropriate equipment and backcountry experience. The Waimakariri kayak stage is braided with gorge sections, wave trains and rapids to about grade 2; typical race flows are given and vary seasonally. Competitors must obey road rules on cycle sections, take care at railway crossings and one-lane bridges, and expect limited river safety coverage and possible self-rescue. Water quality varies; Giardia is present in the Bealey River so drinking from that river is not advised. Non-emergency helicopter extraction may incur charges.
