About the race

The Cilcain Mountain Race is a traditional village show fell race first run in 1960 and held every year since 1973 except 2001 due to foot and mouth. It takes place as part of the Cilcain Show on August Bank Holiday Monday and follows a route from the showground to the highest local peak and back.

Entries for the main race are online only and cost £5 including a processing fee; the entry fee does not include showground admission and there is no entry on the day.

The main race starts and finishes by the church and follows a loop route that goes up the zig-zags and down the north spur. The course is approximately 7.4 km with about 380 m of ascent and descent. Minimum age for the main race is 15 on 31st December.

Junior races are WFRA insured and take place in the fields behind the showground. Entry for juniors is free.

  • U15/U13: same route as main race TBC
  • U11/U9: about 1 km 50 m, two laps of the field boundary
  • U7: about 0.5 km 25 m, one lap

The 2025 event incorporates the Welsh Athletics Senior Short Inter-Regional Mountain Running Championships and North Wales Regional Championships; full entry and eligibility are set by Welsh Athletics and competitors should allow time for affiliation checks before the event.
