Race Overview
The Chiltern Ridge Classic 50K is an ultra marathon traversing the ridgeline trails of the Chiltern Hills between Ivinghoe Beacon and Whiteleaf Hill. The race is a UTMB World Series Index Race. The current route is slightly long at 51km due to local path closures.
Route Details
The point-to-point course starts at the historic Berkhamsted Castle. The route goes through the Ashridge Estate, joins the Ridgeway National Trail from Ivinghoe Beacon, passes Aldbury, Coombe Hill, and Whiteleaf Hill, and finishes at Hampden Meadow in Wendover. The terrain is trail.
Event Logistics
The distance is 50 km with 996 m of elevation gain. The time limit is 9 hours. The course is fully marked with orange signage and ribbons, and marshals are present at key points. A downloadable GPX file of the route is available, and runners must carry a digital version on a watch or phone. Coach transfers are available to book.
Aid Stations & Facilities
There are three full checkpoints on the route at approximately 14.3 km, 29.6 km, and 42.3 km. They provide water, Coke, Precision Fuel & Hydration electrolyte drinks and gels, crisps, sweets, flapjacks, and fresh fruit. There are toilets and pop-up changing tents at the finish. Refreshments are available at the finish.
Participation & Rules
Registration is required. The maximum number of runners is 400. Runners must be aged 20 or older. Dogs are not permitted. The race is licensed by the Trail Running Association and held under UKA rules. A specific gear list is required, including a mobile phone, a route GPX, a light jacket or emergency blanket, a refillable hydration system (0.5L minimum), a collapsible cup, and cash or a bank card.
