Chessie Trail Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K, 5K and 26.2 Relay
The event takes place on November 7, 2026, on the Chessie Nature Trail in the southern Shenandoah Valley, connecting Lexington, Virginia, and Buena Vista. The trail is about seven miles long and has twice been voted one of the nation’s top three recreational trails. Courses follow a smooth gravel and grass surface, roughly ten feet wide, with a very gentle grade.
Distances
- Marathon (26.2 miles)
- Half Marathon (13.1 miles)
- 10K
- 5K
- 26.2 Relay
All four race courses are USATF certified and the event is USATF sanctioned; the Marathon is a Boston qualifier. The full marathon uses out-and-back loops to achieve 26.2 miles; the relay follows the same course with four legs of approximately 8.5, 4.6, 8.5, and 4.6 miles. Exchanges occur at the start/finish and teams must carry a standard aluminum baton.
The route parallels the Maury River and passes farmland, limestone cliffs, small caves, a bamboo section, and remnants of old canal and lock structures. Wildlife sightings are possible. Aid stations are located at the start/finish, turnarounds, and near the South River bridge and provide water, Gatorade, fruit, and snacks; refillable containers are encouraged. Portable toilets and a drop bag area are provided.
Additional features include chip timing, custom finisher medals and shirts, post-race food, age group and overall awards, a virtual option for several distances with mailed amenities, online registration only, and a no refunds policy. Walkers are permitted in the 5K, 10K, and Half Marathon. Trail rules restrict strollers and pets except service animals and advise standard trail etiquette.
