Cheddar Gorge Challenge
The Cheddar Gorge Challenge is an off-road running series held at Warren Farm, Charterhouse, Somerset BS40 7XR. The routes run around Cheddar Gorge and across the Mendip Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, passing gorge cliff-top paths, open Somerset meadows, historic Roman mining remains and World War II bunkers. The half marathon and marathon include sections over Beacon Batch, the highest point on the Mendip Hills.
Distances available:
- 1 km fun run
- 3 km
- 6 km
- 10 km
- Half Marathon
- Marathon
There is a 3 hour cut off for marathon runners to start lap 2. The event also offers a four-event Omnium where competitors choose a long distance (6 km, 10 km or Half Marathon) plus a 100 m sprint, a 1 km middle distance and a hill climb; Omnium entrants using the Half Marathon must finish that run within 3 hours 15 minutes.
Course terrain includes open fields, flat stone paths and technical rocky sections. Routes are marked and marshalled and set off in waves of about 100 runners. Feed stations provide water, electrolyte and a mix of foods including gluten free, dairy free and vegan options; the marathon also offers coke in later stages. Onsite facilities include toilets, coffee and food vans and a bag drop. Photographs are available to purchase after the event. The marathon and half marathon are included as UTMB index races for their respective indices. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
