Challenge the Shield Adventure Run

Challenge the Shield Adventure Run takes place on May 2, 2027, in Parry Sound, Ontario, with the Georgian Nordic Outdoor Activity Centre as host site. The event is a wilderness endurance event on the Canadian Shield in terrain that includes windswept pines, lakes, and granite rock barrens. Teams of two run or trek to as many of the 36 checkpoint challenges as they choose; each checkpoint has a difficulty rating and a points value and teams select their own route and objectives.

Race options

  • 6-hour Adventure Run: up to 36 checkpoints, up to ~35 km, maximum 2,500 points.
  • 3-hour Adventure Run: up to 20 checkpoints, up to ~17.5 km, maximum 1,250 points. Three-hour participants may use a GPS map app for navigation.

Categories include Coed, Male, Female, and Masters (average age over 50) for the 6-hour race; and Open, Juniors (ages 13–19), and Family (one adult plus one to three children under 13) for the 3-hour race. Age is determined as of December 31, 2027.

Entry is by team of two (family teams may contain two to four members). There is a 100-team entry cap. Entry fees (per team) are Early $169, Regular $199, Late $229; junior teams are half price. Fees include two customized race maps, host site day-use fees, customized race swag (example items: t-shirt, hat, mug, glass), a participation sticker, a post-race pizza per team, and a 2027 event membership for race insurance. Early, regular, and late registration deadlines are Jan 15, Mar 12, and Apr 23, 2027. A 25% discount code is available for GNOAC members.

An optional training day on May 1 offers a 1-hour training course (up to ~5 km) and the Team Canada Orienteering Challenge, a ~5 km point-to-point advanced navigation course using the sport-ident timing system and equivalent to an Orienteering Canada middle distance course. Saturday training fee is $25 per person.

Awards and recognition include category prizes and a rotating mascot award for the overall coed winners. Teams that reach 2,000, 1,500, or 1,000 points receive Gold, Silver, or Bronze Challenge the Shield stickers; all teams receive a participation sticker. Any team that achieves the perfect 2,500 points total will be recorded as having completed Ontario's Toughest Navigation Race and crowned accordingly. An all-time points leaderboard accumulates points from this run and the Adventure Race, with milestone clubs and historical results maintained from prior years.
