Camp Lug-A-Chug is a volunteer-focused event held at Mount St. Helens near Cougar, Washington. Participants assist with the logistical preparation for the Volcanic race by transporting water to remote aid stations located on the volcano. This activity involves hiking supplies into areas that are difficult to access by vehicle, ensuring that runners have necessary hydration during the subsequent race event.

Activity Details

The event takes place over two days, and volunteers have the option to participate for a single day or the entire weekend. The primary task involves carrying water containers and other supplies uphill to designated locations. The event includes a 9-mile roundtrip hike each day.

The meeting point for the activity is the lower lot of the Marble Mountain Sno-Park. Participants are encouraged to bring a large backpack for carrying supplies, although a limited number of loaner packs are available. Due to the terrain and the weight being carried, the use of trekking poles is recommended. Volunteers are responsible for bringing their own snacks and personal hydration for the duration of the hike.

Community and Logistics

Registration for this event is free of charge. After completing the daily hikes, food is provided for the volunteers. The event also includes an optional camping component on Friday and Saturday nights near the staging area, offering an opportunity for social interaction and storytelling among participants. As part of the weekend, there is a recognition program where a race entry is awarded to the individual who carries the most weight relative to their body weight, as well as to the person who carries the highest combined weight over both days.
