The Cacapon 12 Hour Challenge is a 12 hour trail event held at 818 Cacapon Lodge Drive, Berkeley Springs, WV. The course is a scenic single-track trail run on a five mile loop that has been used in recent years in the same running direction as the last two editions.
The loop is described as moderately to very technical and would be classified (4,4) on the Ultrarunning.com scale. Each loop contains approximately 750 feet of elevation change. There are a few road crossings on lightly traveled park roads and some stream crossings may occur depending on recent rainfall. The trail is well marked and maintained.
Support on course includes a full aid station at the start/finish offering Tailwind, water and various food items, plus a halfway aid station on the loop providing water and sports drink. A post race meal is scheduled to commence mid-afternoon.
This is the event's 14th year and the organizer notes there was no price increase from the previous year. Awards include handcrafted trophies for the top three men and top three women. Solo runners who complete ten loops qualify for membership in the Cacapon 50 Mile Club and receive a commemorative pint glass. Finisher awards are given to anyone who completes at least one loop.
