About the race
The Burgh Backyard is a Backyard Ultra running event at Dalkeith Country Park, just off the Edinburgh bypass, taking place on 20 March 2027. The format requires each competitor to complete a measured loop of 6.7056 km / 4.167 mile (a "yard") within one hour; a new yard starts on the hour and the race continues until only one runner completes a final solo yard and becomes the official Last One Standing. There is no fixed finish time or total distance.
Each yard begins with timed warnings and competitors must be inside the starting corral when the bell sounds. Missing a start or failing to complete a yard within the hour ends that runner's race; completed yards and total distance are recorded. There are no aid stations on the course; basic water, hot water and food are available at the event village beside the start and finish corral. After dark, runners must carry a working headtorch and a backup light.
Each runner may bring one tent or gazebo with a maximum footprint of 3m x 3m and may have up to three support crew members who must remain in the allocated runner area and cannot provide assistance on the course. Runner parking is available inside Dalkeith Country Park; support crew parking is outside the park. Every competitor receives an event medal; Last Man Standing, Last Woman Standing and the Assist receive separate vouchers.
