Shale Trail Run
The Shale Trail Run takes place in December 2026 on the West Lothian Shale Trail between Winchburgh and West Calder via Broxburn and the Almond Valley. The event follows a waymarked, point to point route with marshals and a tail runner for all races. Dogs and pushchairs are not allowed on any race.
Distances and formats offered:
- 50K Race following the full Shale Trail and allowing one drop bag.
- 25K Race following a section of the Shale Trail to Winchburgh.
- 9K Race following a shorter trail section to Livingston.
- Relay three leg team event of about 9km, 6km, and 10km.
All finishers receive a memento. The 50K has an 8 hour cut off and uses GPS tracking for competitors. Age limits apply: 50K 20 years or older, 25K 17 years or older, 9K and relay 15 years or older. Compulsory or recommended kit includes a head covering, waterproof jacket, space blanket or similar, mobile phone, food and drink, and trail shoes are recommended.
Baggage and drop bag arrangements vary by race; some races offer baggage transport from registration to the finish and the 50K will accept a small drop bag to the mid course checkpoint. Event officials will take photographs and video which may be shared by the organisers. The event supports the Smalls for All charity and there is an option to make a donation on the entry form.
