The Borders Ultra Challenge
The event takes place on 28 and 29 August 2027 and runs between Berwick upon Tweed and the seaside town of North Berwick. The route follows the Berwickshire Coastal Path via Emouth, St Abb’s Head, then on to Dunbar and inland by the John Muir Country park before the finish in North Berwick.
This new double marathon format includes multiple distance options and event choices:
- 84 km double marathon full route
- 42 km half route
- Marathon option
- 10 mile North Berwick option
Participants can walk, jog, or run. There are Solo Start, Ultra March, and Trailblazerz options. Camping and shuttle transfers are available, with campsite facilities around the ~50 km mark for multi day options or half challenges.
The route is fully signed with hundreds of pink arrows and glow-sticks for night sections. An event app provides GPS tracking and Google route maps. Timing scans log progress at rest stops; a 24 hour Control Room monitors the event. Covered marquee rest stops appear every ~12.5 km with major stops about every ~25 km and include seating, changing rooms, hot meals, snacks, energy drinks, and options for dietary requirements. Medical support includes doctors, paramedics, first aiders, podiatrists, and massage teams, plus self help blister supplies.
Finishers receive a medal, a finisher’s T shirt, a glass of fizz and a finishers meal. Corporate team places and optional hospitality packages are offered; over 400 company teams joined in 2025. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
