Memorial Running Event in Newport
The Boots on the Ground for Heroes 5K is a walk and run held within Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island. The event takes place on a course that travels through the state park, with both the start and finish lines located on the parade field inside the historic fort.
The event is held in conjunction with a ceremony that honors service members. Participants have the opportunity to view the Boots on the Ground for Heroes Memorial, which consists of more than 7,000 boots. Each boot is decorated with a flag and a name placard to represent U.S. service members killed in action during the Global War on Terror since September 11, 2001. The memorial exhibition organizes service members alphabetically by state.
Proceeds from the event support the maintenance of the memorial and contribute to Operation Stand Down Rhode Island, a non-profit organization that provides assistance to veterans who are homeless or at risk.
