Blue Heron 10K Trail Race
The Blue Heron 10K is a trail running event held in the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area in Stearns, Kentucky. This event is limited to a field of 100 participants and follows a specific route through varied natural terrain.
The race follows the Blue Heron Loop Trail. The course features an elevation gain of 1,023 feet over a total distance of 6.1 miles. Runners will encounter a variety of technical features including wooden step ladders, the "Crack-in-the-Rock" passage, sandstone bluffs, and waterfalls. The route provides views of the gorge and whitewater rapids. The start is located near the concession stand shelter and utilizes the Horse Trail for the initial portion of the journey.
One fully stocked aid station is available at the 3.4-mile mark. For safety, the event has a total time limit of three hours, with a specific cut-off at the 3.4-mile station. Participation requires advance registration, and a deadline is set for those wishing to receive race apparel.
Awards are presented to the top three overall male and female finishers. Additionally, the event recognizes the top three finishers in several age categories ranging from 10 and under to 70 and over. Due to limited parking at the venue, carpooling is requested, and parking is restricted to designated marked areas.
