Black Canyon Triathlon : Montrose, CO
Presented by the Montrose Recreation Foundation, the 25th Annual Black Canyon Triathlon takes place in Montrose on September 26, 2026. The event is a USAT certified sprint distance triathlon and requires USAT membership for 2026 competitors. It typically attracts about 200 athletes and their families each year. Proceeds benefit the Montrose Recreation Foundation and are used for local recreational programs, scholarships, and donations to community groups that help run the event.
The race offers individual divisions for youth and adults, plus team divisions for 2 or 3 members and a family team division that must include at least one adult over 18. Team entries do the distance corresponding to the oldest team member. Competitors' ages range from about 6 to 70.
Course format and venue details:
- Swim held in the Montrose Recreation District pool; starts by age division.
- Bike held on paved city streets or county roads suitable for road, mountain, or hybrid bikes.
- Run on sidewalks and neighborhood streets; paved surface.
Distances by division:
- Youth 6 to 10: 100 yd swim, 5k bike, 0.8k run.
- Youth 11 to 14: 200 yd swim, 8.7k bike, 2.5k run.
- Youth 15 to 18: 500 yd swim, 22k bike, 5k run.
- Adult 19 and over: 500 yd swim, 22k bike, 5k run.
Awards include overall top male and female and top finishers across age groups and team categories. Packet pickup is available at the Montrose Community Recreation Center on the day before the race.
