Black Canyon Ascent
The Black Canyon Ascent is a point-to-point event held on a paved course that gains near 2,000 vertical feet. Starting at an elevation of approximately 6,500 feet, the route follows Colorado Highway 347 for a steady 5-mile climb. At the 5-mile mark, participants enter the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, where the road levels out for a short downhill section leading to the finish at the South Rim amphitheater.
Participants can choose between two event formats:
- The 6-Mile Ascent (Run): A timed running event covering the full uphill course.
- The 6-Mile Ascent (Challenge Walk): A non-timed walking event that starts 30 minutes before the run.
The course remains open to vehicle traffic, so participants must stay on the left side of the road at all times. Two aid stations are located along the route to provide hydration.
Logistics require all participants to use a mandatory shuttle service. Participants must park in Montrose at the local Boys and Girls Club to catch a shuttle to the start line. A return shuttle is provided after the event. There is no parking available at the start line or the finish line for participants. Spectators must park at designated overlooks near the finish and are responsible for their own park entrance fees.
Post-race activities take place at the park amphitheater and include a breakfast burrito. Participants who register by the designated deadline receive a long-sleeve T-shirt. The race bib provides re-entry to the National Park and can be used for a beverage at a local brewing company in Montrose. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
