BIRR Hilo to Volcano 50K Run/Walk/Relay
The annual Hilo to Volcano 50K Run/Walk/Relay takes place on January 10, 2026, in Hilo, Hawaii. The point-to-point event starts on Banyan Drive at the underground parking lot of the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel and finishes at the Cooper Center in Volcano. The course distance is 31 miles (50K) with approximately 4,000 feet of elevation gain.
Course and logistics
The route uses the shoulders on Hwy 11. Relay teams change runners every 2 miles at the even mile markers. There are no aid stations along the course, so participants must carry their own water and nourishment. A light lunch, snacks, drinks and finish medals are provided at the end.
Events, entry and awards
Event categories include 50K Solo, 50K Relay, 50K Relay Family, and 50K Relay Student. Entry fees listed are $60 for Solo and Relay, and $45 for Family and Student relay teams. Registration closes January 8, 2026. Packet pickup is scheduled at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel on January 9, 2026 and on race morning; there is no day-of registration. 2026 T-shirts and medals are guaranteed for registrations completed by December 28, 2025.
Awards for solo runners include top three overall male and female and top two in each 10-year age group. Relay awards are given by gender, mixed, masters and by family and student team categories with specified team-size and age rules. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
