The BIRR Hilo to Volcano 50K Run/Walk/Relay takes place on Saturday, January 10, 2026, in Hilo, HI. The event offers the following entries: 50K Solo, 50K Relay, 50K Relay Family, and 50K Relay Student. Entry fees listed are $50 for Solo and standard Relay, and $35 for Family and Student relays; prices increase after December 27, 2025.
Course and logistics
The course starts on Banyan Drive at the underground parking lot of the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel and finishes at the Cooper Center in Volcano. The distance is described as a 31-mile route with approximately 4,000 feet of elevation gain. The course uses shoulders on Highway 11. Relay teams change runners every 2 miles at the even mile markers. There are no aid stations along the course; participants are advised to carry their own water and food. A light lunch, snacks, drinks and medals are provided at the finish. Packet pickup is available the day before the race and on race morning; there is no day-of-race registration.
Categories and awards
Solo awards include top three female and male overall, plus top two female and male in each 10-year age group. Relay awards vary by team type: teams with up to three runners compete for top two female, male and mixed teams in the under-40 category and top two in the Masters category for teams whose members are all over 40. Family relay teams (must be from the same family) and Student relay teams (all members high school age or younger) have awards for the top two teams in each category.
