Big Island International Marathon, Hilo, Hawaii
The Big Island International Marathon is held annually in March in Hilo, Hawaii. All races start in the underground parking lot at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel on Banyan Drive and finish on the lawn behind the hotel. Packet pickup and the expo take place the day before the race at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel.
The event program includes multiple distances:
- Marathon: two out-and-back loops along the coast and Old Mamalahoa Highway.
- Half Marathon: coastal out-and-back to a turnaround near highway mile marker 7.
- 10K: route around Liliokalani Garden, over Suisan Bridge, through Bayfront Park.
- 5K: similar coastal loop via Bayfront Park and Kalanianaole Avenue.
- Fun Walk (2 miles): untimed walk down Banyan Drive to Orchid Manor turnaround.
The full and half courses use a temporary routing while the Singing Bridge is under construction. Marathon and half routes pass coastal parks, a lighthouse area, and sections near old mac nut farms and the Tropical Botanical Gardens. The Fun Walk is not timed; participants receive a goodie bag with a shirt and bib.
Aid stations are provided approximately every two miles offering water and a sports drink, with additional fluids and gels at some later stations. Portable toilets and park restrooms are available along parts of the course. Race rules prohibit unregistered participants and number transfers except during the expo. Photographs and videos may be taken on course for event use. Street parking and Bayfront Park lots are available near the hotel; Nani Loa Hotel lots are reserved for guests.
