Big Bay Relay
The Big Bay Relay is an annual team road relay held on May 16, 2026, that travels from Marquette, Michigan to Big Bay, Michigan. The event is listed as the 48th running and covers roughly 25 to 26 miles along the course between the two towns. The race starts at Kaufman Sports Complex in Marquette and finishes at Perkins Park in Big Bay.
Teams are composed of five adult runners or up to seven junior runners. Each runner completes roughly one mile before handing off to a teammate; while one person runs, the rest of the team travels in a support vehicle to meet the next exchange point. The relay format repeats until the full course is covered.
Registration opens February 1, 2026. Registration fees vary by date: $170 plus fee through April 12, $195 plus fee from April 13 to May 8, and $215 plus fee from May 9 to May 13. Divisions include five-person all-female, all-male, and mixed teams, plus a seven-person junior division. All team members receive race swag and shirts are available for purchase. Proceeds from this year benefit the walk, hike, bike, and ski trails in Powell Township.
The relay began in the spring of 1972 with a small field and has grown to include numerous teams. A community participant described the event as "having fun with your friends and family while doing something healthy." Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
