Bend Beer Chase
The Bend Beer Chase is a team running relay in Bend, Oregon that covers approximately 57 miles over one day. The event consists of 12 legs, each varying from 4 to 8 miles, and teams may include between 1 and 6 runners or walkers. On a full six-person team, each member completes two legs; smaller teams divide the 12 legs among fewer people.
The course begins along the Deschutes River in downtown Bend at Drake Park, follows scenic trails and rural back roads to Redmond, and returns to finish at Drake Park. Local breweries host exchange points along the route where participants may choose to sample a 3 to 4 ounce beer; consumption is optional. The finish area is a riverside beer festival at Drake Park with beers on tap from participating breweries.
Event organizers require every team to have a designated driver, and designated drivers are not allowed to consume alcohol during the event. The relay is presented by Cascade Relays, which supports more than 20 local charities and reports having given over $890,000 since 2008.
