Event details

The Beast of the Blacks is a trail running event in the Black Mountains, Wales, held on Saturday 14 March 2026. Distances offered are:

  • 11 miles / 17 km
  • 20 miles / 32.5 km
  • 40 miles / 65 km

Entry fees listed are £48 for the 10/11 mile, £60 for the 20 mile, and £80 for the 40 mile. The event is fully marked and GPX files are available. Minimum age is 17 on the event date. Cut-off times are set at 5 hours for the 11 mile, 8 hours for the 20 mile, and 16 hours for the 40 mile.

Course and support

The routes start from the Longtown area and climb onto the Black Mountains, taking in forest trails, mountain tops, river crossings and local landmarks. Elevation figures given are approximately 2,837 ft for the 11 mile, 4,553 ft for the 20 mile and 9,106 ft for the 40 mile. Checkpoints and refuel zones are provided and are stocked to cater for dietary requirements including vegan options; typical supplies include fruit, snacks, electrolytes and drinks.

The event is canicross friendly; dogs must be at least 12 months old, fit to run and kept on the lead, and owners are responsible for their animals. A full mandatory kit list is enforced with kit checks at registration; essential items include waterproofs, race vest, fluid capacity, emergency food, map or GPX, first aid items, foil blanket, head torch and whistle.
