Event details

The Beast of the Blacks is a trail running event on 14 March 2026 in the Black Mountains area of Wales. The event uses a marked course with GPX files available. The route base and event activity are described around Longtown and Llanbedr in the Powys/Crickhowell area. Minimum age is 17.

Route and support

The 40-mile route is a reverse of the 20-mile loop. Checkpoints are provided on the course and are described as well stocked, offering items such as nuts, bananas, biscuits, crisps, electrolytes, coke, squash, water and vegan options. The course is fully marked and marshals are present.

Facilities, prizes and results

Facilities listed include camping, refreshments, toilets, parking (charge), physios, a full medical team, a barista, and on-site retail. Participants receive a bespoke medal and there are prize positions. Online results and a full event photo gallery are provided after the event.

Canicross and mandatory kit

The event is canicross friendly. Dogs must be at least 12 months old, fit to run and kept on a lead; owners are responsible for their dogs. A mandatory kit list is enforced and full kit checks take place at registration. Required items include waterproofs, a race vest or pack, suitable base layers, map or downloaded GPX, mobile phone, hat and gloves, appropriate trail footwear, a first aid kit, foil blanket, head torch and whistle, and the capacity to carry fluids.
