Beast of the Blacks - Black Mountains event
The Beast of the Blacks offers trail running on marked routes around the Black Mountains, with start and finish in Crickhowell, Powys. Three route options are provided:
- 10 Miles / 16.9 KM
- 20 Miles / 32.5 KM
- 40 Miles / 65 KM
The 40 mile route follows a reverse of the 20 mile loop. Routes pass forest trails, mountain tops, river crossings and historic churches, and participants may see local wildlife such as red kites. The course is marshalled and has checkpoints stocked with a range of foods and drinks, including options for vegan diets.
Cut off times are set per distance, with longer routes allowing multiple hours to complete. The event is canicross friendly; dogs must be at least 12 months old, fit to run, kept on lead, and remain the owner’s responsibility. Mandatory kit is strictly enforced and checked at registration; required items include a waterproof jacket and trousers, race vest or pack, appropriate base layer, capacity for one litre of fluid, emergency food, map or GPX file, hat and gloves, appropriate footwear, first aid kit and foil blanket, reusable cup, head torch and whistle, and a fully charged mobile phone (power pack required for the 40 mile).
