Beast of the Blacks
The Beast of the Blacks takes place in the Black Mountains of Wales, starting and finishing in Crickhowell, Powys. The event traverses a variety of terrain including forest trails, mountain tops, and river crossings. The course is fully marked and supported by marshals.
Participants can choose from three distinct distances:
- 10 Miles (16.9 KM) with 1,535 feet of elevation.
- 20 Miles (32.5 KM) with 4,462 feet of elevation.
- 40 Miles (65 KM) with 8,924 feet of elevation.
The 40-mile ultra-distance consists of a double loop where the second lap is a reverse of the 20-mile route. Specific cut-off times are enforced for each distance: 5 hours for the 10-mile, 8 hours for the 20-mile, and 16 hours for the 40-mile event.
Checkpoints are stocked with a variety of food and drink, including fruit, nuts, sweets, electrolytes, and water. Dietary requirements, including vegan options, are catered for. This is a canicross-friendly event, provided dogs are at least 12 months old and kept on a lead. Post-race amenities include light refreshments and access to a recovery sauna and ice bath.
A mandatory kit list is required for all runners, featuring items such as waterproof clothing, a race pack, a foil blanket, and a reusable cup, as the event is cup-free. Kit checks are performed at registration. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
