Beast of the Blacks 10, 20 and 40 Mile trail event
The Beast of the Blacks is a marked trail event in the Black Mountains on 14 March 2026 offering three distances. The routes include forest trails, mountain tops, river crossings and sections of historic path, with GPX files available. Distances:
- 11 Miles / 17 KM
- 20 Miles / 32.5 KM
- 40 Miles / 65 KM
The course uses Longtown Hall as the stated start and finish location. Cut off times are published for each distance: 11 miles 5 hours, 20 miles 8 hours, 40 miles 16 hours. Elevation gain is provided for each route; conservative values listed are 11 mile 2,837 ft, 20 mile 4,553 ft, 40 mile 9,106 ft. The route is fully marked and supported by marshals.
Checkpoints are described as well stocked and able to cater for dietary requirements including vegan options. Typical checkpoint items include nuts, bananas, biscuits, crisps, electrolytes, water and occasional homemade cake. Facilities at headquarters include camping, refreshments, toilets, paid parking, and a full medical team. The event is canicross friendly; dogs must be at least 12 months old, fit to run and kept on lead, and owners remain responsible for their dogs.
