Beast of the Blacks : Black Mountains, Wales
The Beast of the Blacks is a trail running event set in the Black Mountains of Wales offering three measured distance options. The course is marked and GPX files are available for download. Generous cut off times apply: 11 miles 5 hours, 20 miles 8 hours, and 40 miles 16 hours.
Distances:
- 11 miles (17 km)
- 20 miles (32.5 km)
- 40 miles (65 km)
The route includes forest trails, mountain tops, river crossings and views of local landmarks such as Llanthony Abbey. The 40 mile event follows a reverse of the 20 mile loop so the second lap provides different scenery. Checkpoints are staffed and stocked with a range of food and drink options, including vegan choices, electrolytes and basic snacks.
The event is canicross friendly; dogs must be at least 12 months old, fit to run and kept on the lead. Owners are responsible for their dogs both at headquarters and on the route.
Facilities at headquarters include camping, toilets, refreshments, a medical team and on-site stalls from a local running shop. Prizes and bespoke medals are awarded and online results and a photo gallery are provided after the event.
Mandatory kit is required and will be checked at registration. Required items include a waterproof jacket and trousers, race vest or pack, base layer, capacity to carry 1 litre of fluid, emergency food, map or GPX file, charged mobile phone, hat and gloves, appropriate trail footwear, first aid kit, foil blanket, reusable cup, head torch, whistle and spare batteries. No participant will be allowed to take part without the full kit. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
