Bay Area 5K and Polar Plunge
The Bay Area 5K and Polar Plunge is a multi-sport event organized by Special Olympics Northern California. Held at Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach in Alameda, the event offers both running and water-based activities. The running portions of the event take place along the local beach terrain.
Participants can choose from the following distances:
- 5K
- 1 Mile
The 5K is a timed run where each participant receives a finisher medal. Awards are presented to the first through third place finishers within each age category. The event schedule includes an opening ceremony for the run followed by the race start, with the course clearing later in the morning to transition into the next phase of the event.
In addition to the running distances, the event features a Polar Plunge. Participants are encouraged to wear costumes for both the running races and the plunge. Those who participate in the 5K and raise a specific minimum amount of funds receive a commemorative t-shirt and lunch. The activities conclude with a costume judging session and awards ceremony before the final plunge into the water. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
