AZT Vail Scramble - Vail, AZ
The AZT Vail Scramble is a trail running event offering three distances in the valley between the Santa Rita and Rincon Mountains. Courses run on the Arizona Trail and nearby dirt roads, with point-to-point routing for the longer distances and a common finish at the Gabe Zimmerman Trailhead.
Distances offered:
- Marathon (point-to-point)
- Half marathon (point-to-point)
- 10K (concurrent with final 6.2 miles of the marathon)
The marathon course includes multiple climbs and descents along the foothills of the Santa Rita Mountains. The half marathon and 10K follow a mostly gentle, winding descent through vegetation such as ocotillo, prickly pear cactus, creosote, and mesquite. The marathon and half-marathon begin south of Vail; the 10K starts near Sahuarita Road and Highway 83. All participants are required to park at the Vail School District parking area; school buses transport runners to the respective start lines and return transportation to the parking area is provided after the finish.
Event services include staffed aid stations with water, electrolyte drink and snacks, on-course radio communications for safety, finish-line food and beverages, event apparel and finisher awards, live music at the finish, and awards for top finishers. Proceeds benefit the Arizona Trail Association. Refunds are not given; cancellations at least two weeks prior may receive 75% credit toward Arizona Trail Endurance Series events within one year.
