The AZT Vail Scramble is a trail running event near Vail, Arizona, offering a marathon, half-marathon and 10K along the Arizona Trail through the valley between the Santa Rita and Rincon Mountains.
The point-to-point marathon and half-marathon begin south of Vail and follow the AZT north toward the finish after a short dirt road segment. The marathon includes multiple climbs and descents along the foothills of the Santa Rita Mountains. The half-marathon and 10K follow mostly a gentle, winding descent through ocotillo, prickly pear cactus, creosote, and mesquite. The 10K starts near Sahuarita Road and Hwy 83 and runs concurrent with the final 6.2 miles of the marathon course.
All races finish at the Gabe Zimmerman Trailhead on the Arizona Trail. Transportation to each start line is provided on school buses, and return transportation to the parking area is provided after the finish. All participants must park at Vail School District (13801 E. Benson Highway Vail, AZ 85641).
Registration includes finish-line food, post-race beverages, event apparel (custom event running socks), a finisher award, live music at the finish line, gift certificates and gear for top finishers, and aid stations with water, electrolyte drink, fresh fruit, salty chips and other snacks. The event uses radio communications for participant safety.
Discounted registration is available for Arizona Trail Association members, military veterans, Native Americans, and youth under 18. Refunds are not issued; cancellations through UltraSignup at least two weeks before the event may allow applying 75% of the registration credit to another Arizona Trail Endurance Series event within the following year.
