About the race
The AZT Vail Scramble on April 4, 2027 in Vail, AZ is a trail event organized by Arizona Trail Events offering three distances:
- Marathon
- Half marathon
- 10K
The courses run through the valley between the Santa Rita and Rincon Mountains. The marathon follows a point-to-point route that begins south of Vail and follows the Arizona Trail north, including a short dirt road segment. The marathon course includes multiple climbs and descents along the foothills of the Santa Rita Mountains. The half marathon and 10K follow much of the same corridor and primarily descend through vegetation such as ocotillo, prickly pear cactus, creosote, and mesquite. The 10K starts near Sahuarita Road and Highway 83 and runs concurrent with the final 6.2 miles of the marathon course. All races finish at the Gabe Zimmerman Trailhead on the Arizona Trail.
Event logistics include school bus transportation to the start lines and return transportation to the parking area after the finish. All participants are required to park at Vail School District (13801 E. Benson Highway, Vail, AZ 85641).
Registration includes finish-line food and beverages, event apparel such as custom running socks, a finisher award, live music at the finish, aid stations stocked with water, electrolyte drink and snacks, and a safety net supported by radio communications volunteers. Proceeds benefit the Arizona Trail Association. No refunds are issued; cancellations made at least two weeks before the event may be converted to a 75% credit toward Arizona Trail Endurance Series events within one year.
