Event Overview

The Vail Scramble is a trail running event. It takes place on Sunday, April 12, 2026. The event features three distances: a marathon, a half-marathon, and a 10K. The course is on the Arizona Trail near Vail, Arizona.

Course Details

The race traverses the valley between the Santa Rita and Rincon Mountains. It offers views and courses through desert vegetation including ocotillo, prickly pear cactus, creosote, and mesquite.

The marathon and half-marathon are point-to-point races that begin south of Vail. They follow the Arizona Trail north after a short initial dirt road segment. The 10K starts near Sahuarita Road and Highway 83 and runs the final 6.2 miles of the marathon course. All races finish at the Gabe Zimmerman Trailhead.

The marathon course has elevation changes along the foothills of the Santa Rita Mountains. The half-marathon and 10K courses offer a mostly gentle, winding descent.

Logistics

Transportation to each start line is provided on a school bus. After finishing, transportation back to the parking area is also provided. All participants must park at the Vail School District on E. Benson Highway.

Packet pickup is available the day before the race between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. at a to-be-determined location. An alternative pickup is available in the morning at the Vail School District parking area.

Aid Stations and Environment

The event has well-stocked aid stations. It is a cupless event, meaning no paper cups are provided at aid stations. Water and Skratch Labs hydration are provided in bulk containers. Participants can purchase a collapsible cup at packet pickup or bring their own water bottle or hydration pack.

Post-Race Activities

There are festivities at the finish line, including fresh food, cold beverages, and live music. A runner appreciation party is also held at Charron Vineyards, located down the road from the finish line. The vineyard offers snacks and discounts on wine tastings and purchases.

Event Impact

Proceeds from the event benefit the Arizona Trail Association. The funds support the maintenance and protection of the Arizona National Scenic Trail. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
