Vail Scramble
The Vail Scramble is a trail marathon, half-marathon and 10K that runs through the valley between the Santa Rita and Rincon Mountains along the Arizona Trail. The marathon includes notable ups and downs along the foothills of the Santa Rita Mountains. The half-marathon and 10K follow a mostly gentle, winding descent through ocotillo, prickly pear cactus, creosote, and mesquite and offer sweeping valley views.

The point-to-point marathon and half-marathon begin south of Vail and follow the AZT north. The marathon includes a short dirt road segment within the first mile and the half-marathon includes a short dirt road segment within the first 0.3 mile. The 10K starts near Sahuarita Road and Highway 83 and follows the final 6.2 miles of the marathon course. All races finish at the Gabe Zimmerman Trailhead on the Arizona Trail.
Transportation to each start line and return transportation after the finish are provided on a school bus. All participants must park at the Vail School District parking area at 13801 E. Benson Highway, Vail, AZ 85641.
Aid stations are well stocked with water and Skratch Labs hydration in 5-gallon containers. The event is cupless so no paper cups are provided; a collapsible cup is available at packet pick-up for $3 or participants may bring a water bottle or hydration pack.
Finish line festivities include fresh food, cold beverages and live music from Mariachi Luz de Luna. A runner appreciation party takes place at Charron Vineyards, which offers discounts on tastings, glasses and bottles. Proceeds benefit the Arizona Trail Association and its work to maintain and protect the Arizona National Scenic Trail. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
