AVL Runway 5K
The AVL Runway 5K is a foot race held on the airfield at Asheville Regional Airport. The course runs end to end on Taxiway Bravo beside active Runway 17-35 and is described by the organizer as flat. The festival area is located on the north side of the airfield, placing attendees close to the taxiway and runway for plane spotting. The event features live music, local food trucks offering coffee, pastries, donuts and popsicles, and event merchandise for sale.
Logistics include a remote parking area at 9 Pinner Road in Arden, NC with shuttle service to the race venue. Packet pick-up is available before the race at a nearby location. Entry is limited to 1,000 participants and race shirts are guaranteed to registrants who sign up by September 7, 2026; shirts after that date are available while supplies last.
Safety and security measures include a stadium style security screening for all runners and spectators starting in 2026, public safety officers on site, and a requirement that all participants follow directions from officers. Water on course is limited; runners may carry reusable water containers but may not discard items on the airfield. No pets are allowed. Only registered racers may access the airfield; spectators may view the finish line area. Wheelchairs and jogging strollers are permitted but must start at the back of the field.
Proceeds support local aviation education and nonprofits through named scholarship funds. Overall winners receive airfare vouchers and custom medals. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
