American River Parkway Half Marathon
The American River Parkway Half Marathon is an annual spring half marathon held along the American River Parkway in the Sacramento region. The course is described as flat and shady and travels through old-growth oak forests, lush meadows, and riparian habitat. Live bands perform along both courses, and bananas are allowed at the event.
The course offers multiple aid stations and serves ice-cold water and Gatorade at each station. Runners have six aid stations; walkers are served at eight aid stations. The event includes a post-race lunch and features race shirts and medals for participants in specific races.
The event has an associated fundraising focus: it donates 100% of its proceeds to benefit the American River Parkway. Proceeds and donations continued during a 2019 to 2020 shutdown through three virtual events titled Tour de Parkway I, II, and III. Cumulative donations over past years exceed $400,000. Donations have been used for habitat restoration, invasive plant removal, trash cleanup, interactive kids’ nature trails, and installation of drinking fountains in the parkway.
