Alaska Relay : Overview
Alaska Relay is a team relay over 200 miles, held June 26-27, 2026. The course is divided into 36 legs and is most commonly completed by teams of 12, which allows each runner to complete three legs. The route follows Anchorage area bike paths, travels along Turnagain Arm, and finishes near Resurrection Bay.
Teams operate with two vans of six runners. The traditional rotation assigns each runner three specific legs in sequence, with one van active while the other travels, eats, or rests. Typical rest windows are about 7 to 10 hours between an individual runner’s legs and about 3 to 5 hours of van downtime between sets, depending on overall team speed.
Leg distances vary widely, from under 3 miles to more than 10 miles; most runners cover about 15–18 miles total across their three legs. Night running is part of the relay and the race enforces visibility requirements for night stretches. Teams averaging slower than 11 minute miles may be scheduled in a leapfrog start format so they can complete the course.
Team formats include Full Teams (10–12), Semi-Ultra (7–9), Ultra (up to 6), a 6-Pack half team option, and High School full teams. Divisions include Open, Masters (all runners over 40), Super Masters (all runners over 50), and High School; each division is offered with Men’s, Women’s, and Mixed splits. Teams must supply volunteers or pay a volunteer fee used to hire local non-profits.
