After Dark - Buckhorn
After Dark is a navigation-first night adventure held in the Redbird Purchase area with start and finish at Buckhorn Lake State Resort Park in Buckhorn, Kentucky. The event is USARA-sanctioned and uses a 12-hour race format; the 12-hour race accepts both solo competitors and teams.
The course combines on- and off-trail travel under headlamps and includes multiple disciplines: navigating, biking, trekking, and paddling. The event centers on an included night-navigation clinic led by an instructor from TanZ Navigation that focuses on practical night movement and map-based decision making. Checkpoints are arranged to progressively build confidence and then offer more challenging navigation tasks.
Registration includes waterproof maps with optional extra map sets, the night-navigation clinic, boat rentals or the option to bring a personal boat, premium race-branded swag, perfectly placed checkpoints, and a post-race meal. The event lists a race fee of $165 and indicates registration closes August 17. Race communications and mandatory gear lists are provided to participants before the event.
Additional logistics note that gear staging, clinic access, map check-in, and a race cutoff are part of the schedule, and that boat rental availability and other details are specified during registration. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
