The Grizzly

The Grizzly is a spring coastal trail race run by Axe Valley Runners that starts and finishes in Seaton, East Devon. The event comprises two distances and is organised entirely by volunteers. It attracts around 2,000 competitors each year and has raised well over £500,000 for local clubs, schools and charities since 1988.

The course covers mixed terrain including pebble beaches, lanes, roads, trails and tracks that cross cliffs and fields. Runners encounter sustained climbs, wooded sections, thigh‑deep bogs, at least one river crossing and a pub garden before returning to Seaton. All finishers receive medals and top finishers are presented with handcrafted plates made by a local potter.

Safety and event management include clearly defined cut off points. Runners are required to complete the majority of the route and to maintain an average pace of 19 minute per mile to reach those points. Cut off points are strictly enforced by marshals; failure to follow officials' instructions can lead to removal from the race and loss of event insurance.

The race weekend also includes junior events under the Grizfest banner with several hundred children taking part, event merchandise, published results and post‑race photos. The event operates cup free, uses biodegradable marking tape and has moved to multiple use marshal bibs as part of ongoing environmental measures.
