About the race
Riverway Insomnia is a backyard ultra held at the Riverway Precinct in Townsville. Runners complete repeated 4.2 km laps; each lap begins on the hour and laps alternate direction between anti-clockwise and clockwise. A mid-lap timing checkpoint at Turtle Bridge validates each completed lap.
Two event formats are offered and can be attempted solo or by teams of two to four:
- 100 km : 24 hour backyard ultra, 4.2 km lap every hour
- 42 km : 10 hour marathon format, 4.2 km lap every hour
The event enforces strict lap rules: at 5 minutes to the hour a warning bell sounds; on the hour competitors have two minutes to cross the start line or are recorded DNF. Each lap must be completed before the next hour. Teams may rotate runners; any team member may start a given lap. Winners are determined by lowest aggregated time across all completed laps within each format. If a competitor DNFs they must report to Race HQ to record the result.
Practical event details: bibs must be worn for every lap and lost bibs result in DNF for subsequent laps. A race belt is available at registration for AUD 15. Physio support is provided at scheduled intervals. Live results update after each lap. The recovery area is fenced and participants may use gazebos and chairs; no pegs or stakes in the grass. There is no event power; bring battery banks. Water is available at Race HQ and ice can be sourced nearby. Competitors must carry a phone during night laps, obey a leave-no-trace policy, avoid swimming in the lagoon, and yield to other path users. Sun protection is advised as UV index rises during the day. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
