Ocotillo Trail Endurance Challenge
The event takes place on the Ocotillo Trail in Carlsbad, New Mexico, with the start area at the rear parking lot of Southeastern New Mexico College. The course is an approximate 2 mile out-and-back trail loop through the canyon south of the Living Desert Zoo & Gardens on State Park and city land, with about 229 feet (70 m) of elevation gain per loop.
Participants can enter timed challenges of one, four, or eight hours. During the selected time frame each person completes as many 2 mile loops as desired. The event includes relay options with team exchanges at the trailhead; the four hour relay is limited to two participants, and the eight hour relay accepts teams of two to four. Each participant receives a bib and individual distances are combined for team results.
Course support includes two aid stations located at the half-way point and at the bottom of the hill. Medical staff are available and radio communications are positioned at the one mile mark. Event officials may withdraw a participant who appears distressed. If a participant cannot finish they should notify a race official with their bib number.
This is a timed event with awards based on greatest distance covered by gun time for male and female solo categories, and by total team distance for relay categories.
