Bisbee 1000 The Great Stair Climb
The Bisbee 1000 is an annual outdoor stair climb held in Old Bisbee, Arizona. The course is about 4.5-mile, includes nine staircases totaling over 1,000 steps, and has a reported total elevation gain and loss of approximately 1,175 feet. The route follows stairways and winding roadways through the town, providing views of houses, gardens, and historic streets.
The event is described as the only outdoor stair climb in the U.S. and takes place rain or shine. The finish area includes an "Extra-Ordinary Fitness Court." The event attracts a wide range of participants, from children to adults in their 80s, including competitive runners, walkers, and people who participate in costumes; some competitors have worn full firefighting turnout gear in warm conditions. Organizers note the event has been limited to 1,500 participants in past years.
The Bisbee 1000 began in 1990 and has been recognized in regional programs and awards, including designation as an Arizona Centennial Event and receiving a Governor’s Tourism Award for Special Events in a Rural Area.
Event rules include no dogs or pets (service dogs must be at the very back of the start), no smoking or vaping, no strollers, and no participant substitutions or refunds. Participants must pick up their own bib in person; bibs are nontransferable, must be pinned to the front, and awards must be collected in person and will not be mailed.
