Göteborgsvarvet
Göteborgsvarvet is a major running event in Gothenburg, known as the world's largest half marathon. The main race covers a distance of 21 km, taking participants through the Slottsskogen park, along the waterfront of Hisingen, and past the Avenyn boulevard. The event features a significant atmosphere with an estimated 200,000 spectators and 50 music stations positioned along the course.
The event is part of "Varvetveckan" (The Varvet Week), which includes several other races:
- 21 km (Göteborgsvarvet)
- 10 km (Varvetmilen)
- 4.3 km (Cityvarvet)
- 2.4 km or 1.4 km (Specialvarvet, adapted for participants with disabilities)
- Relay race (Stafettvarvet, for teams of four)
- Youth race (Lilla Varvet, for ages 7-13)
- Children's race (Minivarvet, 210 meters for ages 0-6)
Participant start groups are determined by seeding rules based on previous results or pace. During the race week, the Göteborgsvarvet Expo takes place, serving as a meeting point for participants. The event is organized by the Gothenburg Athletics Federation, and proceeds support local athletic activities and the training facility Friidrottens Hus.
