Göteborgsvarvet
Göteborgsvarvet is a major running event in Gothenburg, Sweden, recognized as one of the world's largest half marathons. The main event features a 21 km course that guides participants through several characteristic areas of the city. The route passes through the Slottsskogen park, along the docks of Hisingen, and follows the main boulevard, Avenyn. The finish line is located at Slottsskogsvallen.
The event is known for significant atmospheric support, typically attracting over 200,000 spectators and featuring 50 music stations along the course. Organized by the Gothenburg Athletics Federation, the surplus from the event supports local athletic programs and training facilities. The race utilizes a seeding system where runners are placed in start groups based on previous results or pace to ensure a smooth flow during the race.
The competition is part of a broader week of activities known as Varvetveckan, which includes:
- 21 km (Main half marathon)
- 10 km (Varvetmilen)
- 4.3 km (Cityvarvet, starting at Götaplatsen)
- 2.4 km or 1.4 km (Specialvarvet, adapted for disabilities)
- Stafettvarvet (Relay race for teams of four)
- Lilla Varvet (For children aged 7-13)
- Minivarvet (210 meters for children aged 0-6)
Additional features include a family area with entertainment and the Göteborgsvarvet Expo, which serves as a meeting place with running inspiration and equipment. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
