Arctic Winter Running in Tromsø
The Polar Night Marathon, also known as Mørketidsløpet, is Norway's largest winter running event held in Tromsø. Participants run during the day through the city streets, experiencing the characteristic blue Arctic light of the polar night period before the sun returns. The course is decorated with candles and lights, and there is a possibility of seeing the Northern Lights during the event.
The event features four different distances:
- Ishavskraft Marathon: A full marathon distance that is AIMS certified and officially measured.
- Polar Night Half Marathon: A certified 21.1 km course.
- Mørketidsmila (10 km): A certified 10 km street race.
- Mørketidstrimmen (5 km): A 5 km distance open to participants aged 11 to 99.
The marathon and half marathon courses are AIMS-certified and officially measured to ensure accuracy. The event attracts a diverse international field, with statistics from previous years showing over 2,300 runners representing 75 different nations. Finishers receive a unique commemorative medal. The race is organized by TUIL Tromsdalen Friidrett. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
