Woody's Tortoise and Hare
Woody's Tortoise and Hare is a 5K handicap race held at Fountain Creek Regional Park in Fountain, Colorado. The event measures fitness by factoring age, gender, height and weight into a handicap. Runners provide age, sex, height and weight at registration; those inputs are used to compute an age handicap and a size handicap, which are added to produce the overall handicap.
The runner with the largest handicap starts first and a countdown clock begins at that handicap value. Other runners start when their handicap time appears on the clock. When the clock reaches zero, elapsed time for the race is recorded and the order of finish reflects the handicap-adjusted standings. Actual running times are also computed for all participants.
The course is mostly dirt trails with a short amount of concrete at the beginning and end and is described as fairly flat with very little elevation gain. Start and finish are at the park pavilions near 2010 Duckwood Rd., Fountain, CO 80817. There is ample parking; vehicles must not be parked on park curbs or they may be towed.
Bib pickup is available at the pavilions on race day. Online registration closes at 5:00 PM the night before the race and there is no race day registration. Entry fees differ for members and non-members, and certain first responder groups may be eligible for a discount code when they contact the organizers prior to registration.
Trophies are awarded to the first three finishers after handicaps are applied. The event prohibits strollers, headphones or earbuds, and pets. Extreme weather may cause cancellation; refunds are not issued for cancellations or no-shows. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
