Winter Solstice Fun Run
The Winter Solstice Fun Run is an annual event held in Portland that offers several coastal and inland routes. Organized by the Portland Runners Club, the event features a variety of distances designed for both runners and walkers. Participants can choose between different terrain types, ranging from town streets and paved foreshore paths to sections of the Great South West Walk trail.
The event includes the following distances:
- 25 km Lighthouse to Lighthouse Trail: Incorporates segments of the Great South West Walk trail.
- 15 km Lighthouse to Lighthouse: Follows Scenic and Cape Nelson Roads from the Cape Nelson Lighthouse into town.
- 9 km Lagoon & Foreshore: Navigates through inner Portland including Fawthrop Lagoon and the foreshore area.
- Irish Mad Mile: A dash through the heart of the Portland town center.
- 1 km Kids Dash: A free participation event for children held at the Ploughed Field.
Bib collection takes place on the morning of the event at the Ploughed Field, located across from the hospital on Bentnick Street. For the longer distances requiring transport, buses depart from this same location to the respective start lines. All courses have a final closure time of 12:30 pm, which implies a four-hour time limit for the longest distance. Due to the nature of the routes, the courses are not suitable for dogs or prams. For every entry, the organizing club contributes a portion of the fee to Beats Cycle for Hope. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
