WILD Wahatoya Runs
WILD Wahatoya Runs is a trail race held in La Veta and Cuchara, Colorado, moving through San Isabel National Forest and nearby public and private lands. The event highlights views of the East and West Spanish Peaks, Raspberry Mountain, and the Cuchara Ski Resort.
There are three distances:
- 50K - 32.4 miles, 6,709 ft elevation gain, max elevation 11,147 ft
- Heavy Half Marathon - 14.6 miles, 3,199 ft elevation gain, max elevation 10,634 ft
- 8ish Mile - 7.6 miles, 1,626 ft elevation gain, max elevation 9,434 ft
The 50K starts in La Veta at the high school and follows county roads, older floodplain tracks with multiple water crossings, ridge climbs through areas affected by the 2018 Spring Creek Fire, and maintained mountain trails before finishing at the Cuchara Yacht Club. The Heavy Half and 8ish Mile begin on private property near Cuchara, use the Dike Trail and local connector trails, and converge on the same Yacht Club finish.
Course features include steep stairs, long switchbacks, shaded lodgepole and aspen sections, and multiple aid stations. The finish area at the Yacht Club includes live music, food, and finish line beers provided by a local brewer. Event rules emphasize leave no trace practices, mandatory gear lists, no dogs, no pacers, and required check in at manned aid stations.
