About the race
Wild Horse Gravel is a gravel running and cycling weekend held in DeBeque, Colorado, in mid May. The event combines gravel bike races on Saturday with a mostly gravel half marathon on Sunday, plus town-centered social events and camping. The Wild Horse Half Marathon is a mostly gravel out-and-back that leaves the town of DeBeque and travels into the Wild Horse area set aside to protect wild horses. The course runs between 4,900 and 5,200 feet in elevation and has a total elevation gain of 767 feet.
Terrain is rolling with a mix of climbs and fast runnable sections. Aid stations are located at mile 3.5, the 6.7-mile turnaround, and mile 10. The course is described as remote high desert scenery. Weekend activities include a country cookout, campfires, live local music, packet pick-up and evening downtown events with food trucks, camp trivia, a glowstick bonfire with s'mores, and prizes.
Camping options include free tent and RV camping near the community center, riverside camping on a first come first served basis, and a community gym open for indoor sleeping. Some services such as bike tech, food trucks, and horseback activities are available on site. The Wild Horse Challenge spans both days: participants complete a Saturday gravel distance and the Sunday half marathon. Finishers receive a memento at the finish line and age group awards are given for the top three male and female finishers in each listed age group; awards are not mailed.
