Race Overview
The West Texas Ultra is a trail running event with distances of 10 km, 25 km, 50 km, and 50 miles. It takes place at the Lake Meredith National Recreation Area in Fritch, Texas. The course is a remote, scenic dirt single-track trail that begins and ends at the South Turkey Creek Trailhead.
Course Details
The trail route uses the Turkey, Harbor Bay, and Fritch Fortress trails. The surface is single-track dirt. For the 50-mile distance, there is approximately 4,500 feet of elevation gain and loss across rugged hills. The event is a "no cup" race, meaning participants must bring their own water-carrying system.
Event Schedule
The event is held over two days. Activities on Friday include a 10 km night race and a 10 km RUCK event with a 25-pound minimum weight requirement. Saturday features the main ultra distances. A cutoff time of 13.5 hours is in place for the longer races.
Participation Details
All finishers receive a collectible medal. For the 50 km and 50 mile distances, the specific distance is inscribed on the medal. Awards are given to the first-place male and female finishers in each distance, and a special award is given to the last finisher in the 50-mile race. The event is part of the Texas Ultra Series, where finisher medals from each series race combine to form a map of Texas. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
