Waterville Half Distance 2026
The Waterville Half Distance is a triathlon event scheduled for July 11, 2026, in County Kerry, Ireland. The competition consists of a sea swim, a cycle route through mountainous terrain, and a run along the coast. Participants can enter as individuals or as part of a relay team.
The event begins with an open water swim in Waterville Bay. Due to the nature of the sea swim, the organizers require all participants to have prior experience in open water swimming. Additionally, every swimmer is required to wear an appropriate wetsuit for this segment of the race.
The cycling portion of the triathlon includes several significant ascents. Athletes must navigate the climb at Coomakista, as well as the steep mountain passes of Ballaghbeama and Ballaghisheen. For safety, the use of hard-shell helmets is mandatory during the cycle leg, and participants are responsible for ensuring their bicycles are in safe working order. The final stage of the event is a half marathon which takes place on the cliff road in Waterville.
As part of a green initiative, the event has transitioned to a model that reduces single-use plastics and offers optional race t-shirts to minimize environmental impact. Finishers receive a medal upon completion of the course. Participants must be at least 18 years old and hold a valid Triathlon Ireland license or an equivalent one-day license to compete.
