Warriors Run - Strandhill

The Warriors Run is a 15 Kilometre road and hill race held in Strandhill, County Sligo. The 2026 event takes place on Saturday 22nd August. Strandhill is situated on the Atlantic seaboard, about 8 kilometres west of Sligo town, at the foot of Knocknarea Mountain whose summit (1,070 ft) is crowned by a megalithic cairn where Queen Maeve is reputedly buried.

The course starts at the Cannon Gun on the beachfront, runs to the top of Knocknarea, circles Queen Maeve’s Cairn and returns to the beachfront. Around nine kilometres of the route are on paved roads; the central six kilometres include a 700 foot climb across fields, loose gravel, unsurfaced and heather paths. The ascent contains steep sections where runners often slow to a walk, and the descent can be slippery even in dry conditions.

Approximately 1,200 runners take part annually. All competitors who finish receive a bespoke medal. Online registration for the 2026 event opens in May. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
