Virginia Creeper Marathon
The Virginia Creeper Marathon is a 26.2 mile race held in Abingdon, Virginia. The event takes place entirely on the Virginia Creeper Trail, which is a former railroad bed. The course features a surface that is soft and consists of a flat to gentle grade, with occasional wooden trestles.
This event follows a path consisting of two out-and-back segments. The start and finish lines are located near the Abingdon Trailhead at the junction of Green Springs Road and the trail. During the race, participants pass through the Watauga Trailhead three times and the Alvarado Station Trailhead twice. Both of these trailheads offer parking access for spectators.
The course is USATF certified and qualifies as a Boston Marathon sanctioned event. The event is organized as a low-frills race where amenities are minimal, though all participants receive a race memento. Awards are provided for the top male and female finishers, as well as the top finisher in several age categories ranging from 29 and under to 80 and over.
Aid stations are positioned every 3 to 3.5 miles along the trail. These stations and the finish line area provide water, sports drinks, refreshments, and homemade food items for the participants. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
