About the race
VICTORY LANE BACKYARD 12 in Bussey, IA is a Backyard Ultra that uses repeated hourly laps to measure performance. Each lap is 4.167 miles; laps must be completed within 60 minutes and runners must return to the starting corral at the top of the hour or be disqualified. Three warning signals are given before the hour mark at 3, 2, and 1 minute intervals.
The race has a cap of 12 hours. The winner is the last person to complete one more lap than any other competitor; all other participants receive a DNF in official terms but will be listed with the total distance or number of laps they completed. If multiple runners finish the full 12 laps, they each receive a Finished score and there is no single winner.
The course begins and ends at the barn and runs on mostly grass with some gravel. Participants should expect roots, rocks, uneven surfaces, and possible water on the trail. Snacks are available at the starting corral and at an aid station. Crews may provide aid only after a runner completes a lap.
Early packet pickup is available on the Friday before the event at CrossFit Valley Junction and packet pickup is available on race day. A pre-race meeting is mandatory for all participants. Registration opens October 1, 2026. There are three pricing tiers with increases on May 1 and August 1, a t-shirt add on for $25 before the August price increase, and no refunds or transfers.
