Event Overview
Victory Lane Backyard 12 is a distance running event held in Bussey, Iowa. The race follows the backyard ultra format where participants must complete a 4.167 mile lap, known as a yard, every hour. This structure results in a total distance of 50 miles if a runner reaches the 12 hour mark. The event features a fixed race cap of 12 hours.
Competition Rules
Participants must return to the starting corral at the top of every hour to stay in the competition. Warning signals are provided at three, two, and one minute before the next lap begins. Runners are required to start the next lap immediately upon the signal. Each lap must be finished within the 60 minute window. Participants are prohibited from leaving the course during a lap except for restroom use. The use of personal aids such as trekking poles or pacers is not permitted.
The winner is defined as the last person to complete one more lap than any other participant. If no runner can complete an additional solo lap, no winner is declared. While only the winner avoids a DNF (Did Not Finish) status, all runners receive official results showing their total laps and distance covered.
Course and Facilities
The route begins and ends at a barn and proceeds over terrain consisting primarily of grass and gravel. The surface includes natural obstacles such as roots, rocks, and uneven ground, with the potential for water on the course.
A crew area is located east of the barn where supporters can set up tents or canopies. Participants may receive aid from their crew only between laps. Snacks are provided at the starting corral and at an aid station. There is limited access to electricity at the site. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
