About the race
The Victory Lane Backyard 12 is a distance running event held in Bussey, Iowa, at 2308 Victory Lane. The race follows a traditional backyard ultra format with a duration cap set at 12 hours. Participants aim to complete a 4.167 mile lap, known as a yard, every hour. To remain in the competition, runners must be present in the starting corral at the top of every hour and finish each loop within the 60-minute time limit.
The course begins and ends at a barn, consisting primarily of grass and gravel surfaces. Runners should expect typical trail conditions including roots, rocks, and uneven terrain, with the potential for water on the course. Participants are required to follow specific rules: no trekking poles or personal aids are allowed on the course, no pacers are permitted, and runners may not leave the course except to use the restroom during a lap.
Available distances and formats:
- Backyard Ultra (Maximum 12 hours / 50 miles)
The event site includes a crew area located east of the barn where participants can receive food, fluids, and assistance between laps. Crews are permitted to set up tents or canopies in this designated space, though electricity is limited. The race provides snacks at the starting corral and at an aid station. Registration operates on a tiered pricing schedule, and a mandatory pre-race meeting is held for all participants prior to the start. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
