About the race
The Vale Coastal Trail Races on 24 April 2027 stage point to point trail events along the Vale of Glamorgan coastline. Three distances follow the Wales Coast Path and finish together at Ogmore by Sea village hall after a final climb known locally as the Hill of Doom.
Distances
- 32.5 miles Vale Ultra, point to point along the Vale of Glamorgan Coast Path
- 18.5 miles Vale Trail, joins the Ultra route on the shoreline at Porthkerry
- 10 miles Vale Trail 10, follows the final ten miles of the longer routes
The Vale Ultra starts from Penarth Pier and passes 19 beaches, with the final 14 miles along the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, an area noted for cliffs, rock formations, secluded coves and rolling countryside. The 18.5 mile race begins at Porthkerry Park and joins the shoreline route. The 10 mile race joins the other courses around Llantwit Beach and follows the same final coastal section.
The entire route follows the Wales Coast Path and is well signposted. The event is self navigated; organisers provide a marked map, detailed route notes and additional markers at tricky junctions. Checkpoints are manned and numbered by race distance: six for the Ultra, four for the 18.5 mile race and two for the 10 mile race, offering water, energy drinks, squash and light snacks.
This is a linear race. Bus transport is provided from the finish to the starts and places are reserved during registration. A compulsory kit list must be carried. Entry fees, space limits and included services such as electronic timing, finisher medal, checkpoints and first aid are published for each distance.
