About the race
Upington Extreme is an annual off-road triathlon held at Oranjerus Resort near the Orange River. The event has been presented since 2008 and runs once a year; participation has grown from about 15 athletes at the first edition to nearly 200 athletes annually.
There are multiple race formats with distinct distances:
- Extreme: 800 m swim, 28 km mountain bike, 10 km trail run
- Lite: 250 m swim, 14 km mountain bike, 5 km trail run
- Extreme Kids: 20 m swim, 1 km mountain bike, 500 m run (for ages 6–11)
The swim takes place in the river. The mountain bike sections are described as enjoyable but technical. The run finishes on dirt roads and through Kalahari veld. Local businesses, including Upington Toyota and Upington Toyota Financial Services, are listed as main sponsors and additional sponsors support water points and staffing for the event.
Race history notes that the event grew from a reworked local multisport competition and was developed to fit into a single day with options for younger participants and shorter distances. The event date in 2026 is 24 October and entries for that edition closed 21 October. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
